Paul McKenny - Cumbria's Coach of the Year 2015 at the Cumbria Sports Awards

In 2015 UTC were excited to announce that Paul McKenny (one of our founding members) had been nominated for Coach of the Year at the Cumbria Sports Awards. The nominations were scrutinised and reviewed by a panel of judges who eventually chose our Paul as the winner. Paul, aka Macca, was involved in setting up the Club in 2013 and remains a great asset to UTC, providing coaching sessions and general humour for the club. He was awarded his trophy at the Cumbria Sports Awards ceremony by the local ultra legend Andy Mouncey.

Paul McKenny, was named Cumbria’s Coach of the Year for 2015.  Paul comes from Ulverston, and is working hard to develop athletes in his sport of Triathlon. As a British Triathlon Level 2 Coach, he has been supporting athletes at the club from beginner level through to Ironman standard, increasing the numbers of high performing triathletes coming through the Ulverston Tri Club in the last year.

The Tri Club can now boast a clutch of athletes who are representing their country at various age groups and disciplines of triathlon, and this is down in no small part to the coaching, support, advice and guidance provided by Paul.

Community Group of the Year 2014 at the Cumbria Sports Awards

These awards recognise the talents, commitment and successes of teams and individuals throughout Cumbria who are involved in sport. UTC was up against several other new clubs from Cumbria, it was safe to say the committee weren't expecting a win. When Ulverston Tri Club was called out, Paul McKenny said it came as “a real surprise”. The Community Group of the Year award is given to a club or group that is providing exceptional sporting opportunities for their local community. UTC were praised for how we have increased participation in a range of activities for people of all ages and abilities — from organising ‘try a tri’ sessions for beginners, through to structured training and events for more progressive athletes. Winning this award was a terrific achievement for the club — it’s testament to the hard work and commitment of those behind the scenes, as well as the enthusiasm of club members.
